Took Friday off to collect a dog the owners felt their expanding work demands meant they were unable to devote sufficient time to.

He was pretty stressed out as he'd been through two failed adoptions of their own efforts.

GSPs are are a demanding breed to start with and this big lad (can put his chin on the table without raising his head) had no manners or respect when he arrived on Friday, things are improving after mooching around with me all the ahem daylight hours since, but I'm back at work Monday.

Hello Peter. Well, I understand your apprehension. I adopted a cat who had similar experiences, only, she was from the RSPCA. They told me she had been dumped on them by her original owner. What they neglected to tell me, was she had been re-homed twice and returned to them on both occasions due to her nasty temperament.
I knew she was a bit stroppy and believed them when they said it was due to being in the cattery for so long. The first three months were terrible. She constantly swatted me..with claws...and bit me.After a particularly nasty bite, I was on the point of taking her to my vet to be euthanased when she suddenly seemed to change. My vet agreed that Meg is a very insecure animal and that euthanasia was preferable to her being re-homed again. I said I would persevere a bit longer but if she bit me again....

Happily, after a year she is a different cat...not perfect by any means but no longer prone to biting and scratching. She can be very loving and sweet and is finally trusting me. Since we came back from the vets after her jabs, it's almost as if she understands I'm not going to get rid of her.

I know cats are very different from dogs but I would think their insecurity from being shipped from pillar to post are similar and I wish you and your new pal all the very best! I'm sure you will succeed with him and he will be very happy with you. Good luck and please keep us posted.

Hi Peter. Had similar trouble with a Jack Russel that had been ill treated by children. Takes time and patience, we were rewarded with 11 years of a faithfull companion. Broke our hearts when she finely went to that kennel in the sky.

I think a lot of bad animal behaviour results from insecurity. Really they are no different from humans in that respect.

If the dog has to be left alone tomorrow while you're at work, Would it help to leave the radio on a programme which has voices rather than music so that he doesn't feel too abandoned?

Found out he'd slept in owners bedroom, so after two nights on the sofa....

Still having politeness lapses when being made to do something he doesn't want to do but he is now watching our food from too close rather than eating it and sometimes manages to keep away.

Has been left in his crate while my wife was at work and been mostly quiet according to our semidetached neighbour and wifes stealth approach to house.

He has now glued himself to her. :twisted:

It's early days yet Peter. He'll get there eventually, I'm sure.

This time last year, I would never have believed Meg the Mog would allow me to stroke her without clawing me to bits. She now follows me around and actually comes and sits on my lap. She started purring three months ago and I almost cried!
