Is it true that if you buy a spit roasted chicken at the supermarket you now have to pay VAT on it?

Yes I believe so because in the last budget the Chancellor introduced some crazy rule that foods heated up were to be charged VAT. For a government that alleges to pride itself on doing away with bureauracy and red tape, this really takes the biscuit. So you will have to ask for a spit roasted chicken that has been cooked and allowed to go cold, and then reheat it at home, I suspect, to avoid paying the VAT on it. So no more VAT free hot sausage rolls, Cornish pasties, meat pies, etc. For the paltry extra amount on tax this will raise, I despair !

Whenever we have bought pre-cooked chickens - it's been to eat cold anyway. I wonder if this will affect when I buy a loaf of bread that is still warm after coming out of the ovens.

This is one of the present government's U-turns. Read this report for Osborne's second thoughts (if he can think at all, that is!)

I don't think he U-turned on everything - it says hot savouries including pasties and pies are exempt. I did notice that the roast chickens took a large hike in price this month.

I can't understand any government increasing tax on food at a time when people are struggling to make ends meet.

It seems to me that it should be a time to keep tax on essentials for life low e.g. food and utilities.

Not only Supermarkets are conning people.
Five years ago I bought a super-duper 7L Stainless Steel Prestige Pressure Cooker and this week a small plastic ring broke that holds the relief valve.
Prestige no longer make this part so they offered me 10% discount on a new model. I declined their paltry offer and made it known that I will never buy anything produced by the company again. They stopped making my particular model only three years ago and the stainless steel pan will be going long after we will all be gone to the great garden in the sky! I now have a renamed jam pan.
Looking into the offer I can get 30% at least off Prestige products on line.
However I have ordered an 8L Tefal Pressure Cooker which should be with me shortly.
JB.
