I've long wondered why it's deemed ok to release such things into the air at public events, while dumping exactly the same stuff out of a car down a country lane would (quite rightly) be an offence.
As no one else seemed to see anything wrong with it, I just assumed it must be yet another symptom of my becoming a grumpy old woman!

The lanterns I now see soaring up through the approach to Stanstead Airport every New Year now.

They're an absolute menace to farmers, wildlife, corn fields and thatched cottages and anybody with any common sense would campaign to have them nationally banned.
