Just finished lifting the last row of my Charlottes. Yield mediocre both in terms of numbers and size - no 1/2lbers this year. On the other hand the quality has been quite good. Very little slug damage - I have always found Charlotte good in that respect - and not many lost to rots either so quite pleased in the end. I think what happened is that the heavy rains came at at ime such as to drown the 'early' forming tubers so that the rest of the crop came later - hence the lack of number and size.

Also just started on my early(!!!) carrots. What a year.

Been thanked: 2 times

Just lifted another row of Desiree, quite good yield, some 'jacket' sized, very little slug damage.
Autumn King carrots at other end of same plot have not developed at all, been in for 3 months and roots only little finger size or less.

Hi John,
It certainly is a funny old year this year. The Carrots here are great but have not yet lifted any Autumn King 2 yet but judging by the tops that I have uncovered they seem to be fine. I am just Finishing up my first sowing of Nante 2 and they have been really superb. I will be doing the final spacing of Autumn King 2 next and then onto the second sowing of Nantes 2.
Yesterday I lifted a single plant of Axona because the foliage had died and I didn't like the look of it because the rest of the row are still in hail and hearty growth. There were 9 potatoes 8 about twice the size of an egg and one a lot larger which had been attacked by about every pest we have on the plot. Early slug damage and knocking it with my knuckle it sounded hollow by the sound. When I cut it open there were slugs and millipedes having a party. The other 8 were totally unscathed and I had 4 with my meal last night and and contrary to belief Axona has a superb taste to me. They tasted just like potatoes used to years ago. It is the first time that I have grown Axona and I certainly will grow them every year from now on. I am seriously impressed. Hope the other 19 taste just the same!
JB.
