Anti Slug Cream

Does anyone know of any cream like substance that would deter slugs? I always surround newly planted seedlings with plastic collars cut from plastic bottles. In most years these work pretty well, but in this "year of the slug" I am losing the battle. Is there is a cream or a substance that I could smear around the outside of the collar which the slugs would not cross?

Vaseline usually works well.
