If the "summer" carries on like this I expect the allotment waiting lists may shrink next year :wink:

At the time you were posting that I was actually out showing my runners where the poles were :wink:

:lol: That tickled my funny bone :D

My beans have finally started to romp away but the beans at school (same variety, same age) are only just showing signs of thinking about embracing the poles :). Mind you ALL of them have flowers and tiny beans on them.

Take heart though fellow growers, I have just relit our solid fuel stove becasue the cottage was feeling cold and damp this morning, so I can almost guarantee 30+ degree heat .............. well would you look at that, the sun is poking through the clouds! First time in days! :shock:

On another more positive note, my winter squashes are flowering :) although only females at the moment. Can see males forming behind them, so in another week, with luck, I'll be out with the paintbrush, pollinating - just incase the bees are reluctant to brave the cool weather.

You got me measuring my Beans. Best Red Flame is just over 6' with the average probably just over 5', Moonlight are a bit behind at just over 5' and about 4½' average. Both are just coming into flower at the bottom. They were planted out on 26th May (sown 4th) with a fleece wrap for about a week.
Protection makes all the difference. Cobra planted out in the greenhouse on 14th May (sown 12th April) are up to the roof and flowering and cropping nicely.
Yet more Calabrese picked today - definitely recommend Ironman.
Thinking of spraying second early Potatoes.

I went out and checked; after eight hours three quarters had done a couple of turns each around their canes :) :)

We have been eating curly kale for several weeks, we have been picking lettuce, and had some of our first early potatoes yesterday. But our dwarf beans are just not moving and I about our sweet peas as this year every singe one of the plants I sowed have gone yellow from the bottom and I dont know what to do to help them recover. I cant see that happening this year. Some have got flowers on but they are only quarter of the way up the poles.

I have got flowers on the courgettes so I am hoping for the best with these.

It never seemed to have stopped raining here, our paths between our raised beds are a quagmire and we have drains in but they are just not coping the the constant downpours.

I will not give up though, :) I am determined to get something out of this year...

I'm sure things will soon be a lot warmer, then we will be in trouble, as the deep roots will have rotted off and the shallow roots will not be able to take up water quick enough..... :)

Hi All

I know things are slow, today I started to lift the first of my first early potatoes, I planted these early April so they are about ready to lift, when I dug the first plant, boy that was so disappointing and not what I was expecting, all I got was a hand full of marble sized potatoes, its going to take at least another 6 weeks to get them to a half decent size.

I have just dug some Lady Christl our second plot of Potatoes at home here...following Premiere.
On hand over to the Mum the report is that they are too big for new....

I note that the couple of blight patches I spotted yesterday has now escalated............. :(
