Alloment Cultivator.

We have on our allotment site a tiller/cultivator left to the site by a retired member so that anyone without a machine like this can use it.The idea is to rent it out so that the cost of servicing/repairs is covered.Does anyone on this forum have the same arrangement on their site;if so what rental is charged and what rules are in place to safeguard "hirer and hiree"? i.e.indemnity,supply own fuel etc. deposit on machine?Lots to take into account.

I'm afraid I have no answer for you on this one, Snooky. By going down the hirer/hiree route you could be walking into a 'minefield' as there is so much to consider in these days when some are only too keen to get 'accident' lawyers involved for the most trivial incident.
One possibility might be to allow a few named volunteers only to use this machine to rotovate other's plots for a small fee. The fee could be set to cover running expenses and generate a bit extra for site funds. Your volunteers could be offered free use of the machine for their efforts and would also be responsible for its maintenance.

Some years ago we needed a new mower for the site, as earlier letters have said it is a minefield. We came up with the idea that everyone paid the same amount towards the new mower, in effect making everyone part owner. as we have never had any problems, we do not know if this would have worked out.
