Re: Merry tiller No 2.
A reverse accessory was available for your model, the cable pulled a friction disc, driven by a short vee belt, into the vee of the chaincase pulley. There were other accessories such as a brake drum on the chaincase pulley for use with the Merry Truck but I have only seen these on the earlier 10.5&...

Re: Qualcast Suffolk Punch 43S
That chassis was used from the late 1960s onwards. The Suffolk/Qualcast was always a “budget” cylinder mower but is reliable and robust. The aluminium engine was not quite as well regarded, it does sound a bit clattery but I don’t think there are reliability issues except for the carburettor. That p...

Re: mowers
If you already have a quad, get a mower for it, they don't make as much as a used ride on second hand and are made for mowing paddocks. If you want something that will go through anything, a flail mower will chew up rush bobs.

Re: mowers
I used to use a brush cutter for my orchard and round the vegetable plot but having a “sickle mower attachment” for a Merry Tiller Titan in stock when the primer bulb for the brush cutter failed, I decided to try the sickle mower. I would not go back to the brush cutter. The sickle mower is a lot fa...

Re: Templar Tiller/Qualcast idler bearing.
I repaired a Templar Tiller for the local postmaster a while back and the jockey pulley looks a lot like the skate wheel fitted to Merry Tillers but Templar had welded large washers to either side of the wheel. Westwood marketed the same machine so Westwood dealers may have the part. I did get an en...

Re: Dellorto 2013A
This carb is notorious for the only running on choke after the Winter lay up. Nothing you do will cure it except run on half choke until it clears its' self. Once it does clear it will be OK until the next long lay up. A conversion kit to a variable main jet was available but no one seems to know wh...

Re: Qualcast Classic 35s bowl nut / jet.
The carb in the picture is very close to a Del-Orto, I suspect that Tecumseh may have made Del-Ortos under licence in the US. I think the ball bearing is used as a blanking plug, Tecumseh must have found it easier to drill the float bowl bolt right through and then knock in the ball. My brother has ...

Re: Qualcast Suffolk Punch
I recon your machine will have a contact-less magneto ignition so there are few things that can go wrong. Either the cutout button or wire is eathing out when it shouldn’t, or the HT lead or cap need replacing, or you have a dead magneto. Disconnect the wire that goes from the coil to the cutout but...

Re: Merry Tiller Newbie
Your Merry Tiller is a Titan and was made in 1978, making it one of the first to have reverse gear in the chaincase. It probably has loop type handles like most modern mowers, which proved unpopular and Wolseley changed back to 1960s style handles within a year. Titan was written on the cowl atop th...

Re: Wind powered water pump
I visited CAT about ten years ago and they had a decidedly low-tec wind powered pump then. The fan drove a crankshaft which pulled a long connecting rod up and down. This ended in a ball joint fastened to the pump rod. Being a ball joint, the fan could swing round on it’s turntable as the wind chang...

Re: Merry Tiller belt guard
The last two full sets of aerator rotors on eBay made £238 and £230 respectively and the US Merry Tiller makers sell new ones for $300 in the States. I have considered remanufacture as I have the right tube and some genuine spikes for them, and can get flanges cut by water jet for a reasonable price...

Re: Merry Tiller belt guard
All early Majors, professionals and Titans that had a belt guard also had the bracket on the chaincase, the whole front end of the guard was free to vibrate which is why the "anti rattle spring and washer" was fitted to it. I attach a picture from a mid 1970s brochure of the lawn spikers i...

I plucked up courage and chose one of the free hosts that offer both FTP uploads and no compulsory adverts on the site. The system worked in a similar way to the one I used for business and, up to now, I haven’t found a catch. It comes with a rather unwieldy free domain name, http://www.owhss.webfre...

Re: Web hosts
Thanks for the information, I have just had a go at BT's site. However I have a problem with template web pages. I guess it is my fault but I can't make them work. Give me a blank page in microsoft front page or notepad and I can make something that looks OK, but if I alter templates I end up with a...

Hello everyone. I’m not sure where this question should go so apologise if you have to move it. I am on our local horticultural society show committee and as the only member who can write web pages I got volunteered to make a website for the show. It is just an advert for the show and a copy of the ...
