Courgettes
My first attempt at growing courgettes and they are coming along fine (big leaves and large yellow flowers). My question is “when can I pick them?” They have been about 2 - 3 inches long now for about 2 weeks but nothing else is happening. I’m feeding them a tomato feed once a week and making sure t...

Re: Chicken Manure Pellets
Is there a recommended dosage i.e. one scoop per container? I'm guessing that the toms could overdose if I'm not carefull!

Chicken Manure Pellets
I want to try and grow some of my tomatoes in 9” pots this year. Will it be ok if I add some chicken manure pellets to the soil before planting? I will be doing this with my sweet peppers and aubergines (as recommended by Primrose) but I cannot find any do’s and donts regarding toms.

Re: outdoor strawberries
I’m eagerly watching my strawberry plants for the first sight of the colour red. Alas, they are not much bigger than a pea yet!

Tomato Ring Culture
I have been reading recently about the use of ring cultures for tomatoes, sweet peppers, aubergines and cucumbers. I’m thinking of using them on my grow bags this year. Has anyone used them before and do they really work?

What compost?
Hi All. What is the best to use when planting veg in their final pot or container in the garden? For my garlic I have been using a mixed compost from Homebase which has John Innes No. 1 added to it. Yet when I asked in my local garden centre what is the best to use for my dwarf beans I was told to f...

Many thanks Geoff. Now I know what I'm supposed to be doing (first time gardener, only ever seen shallots in Tescos!!).

Re: shallots from seed
I’m growing them in the 2” square flimsy pots that Geoff describes. My son has planted his seed shallots in the garden and they are also about 2 inches tall. I keep my shallots in a non-heated plastic greenhouse but I do not know what they should look like when they are ready for planting out. Shoul...

Re: shallots from seed
I planted my shallots from seed indoors in a propagator and they now each resemble a piece of thin grass about 1-2 inches tall. What do I do with them now? They seem too delicate to pot on but they don’t appear to be doing much.

Re: Containers
Hi Nature’s Babe
I’m with FW33. Off to the garden centre Saturday to buy some more seeds (just in case I mess up what I already have).

Containers
I want to grow onions in containers this year. I have read that the onions should be spaced 4 inches apart but how deep should the container be? Would a garden trough be the ideal container?

I want to try to grow garlic in containers this year. Is it ok to get started now? If so what are the best containers to use?
