Re: What happened to soil based potting compostd?

All my local garden centres sell this in 1, 2 and 3 as well as B&Q. It is much heavier than the peat I buy and as I have a slipped disc I have to get my sons to carry it into the greenhouse. I use it in pots and hanging baskets and again have to use my children to move them for me whereas I coul...

Re: Starting a new plot

I would think of building a good soil mix. The one in my raised beds was a third topsoil, a third peat (saved from the greenhouse pots) and a third coir. The topsoil was bought in and the coir was bought as compressed dry blocks which needed rewetting. The brand name was "Neopeat" and was ...

Re: Shirley tomatoe seeds

I got mine from my local garden center.

I think they were Mr Fothergills but 11 out of 12 seeds I put in last weekend are just about ready for pricking into pots.

Re: Which Cucumber?

Have a look at the F1 all female mini varieties. I grow these and always have a good crop which starts early and last well into October. We usually get more than we can eat from 3 plants for a family of 4.

Re: raised beds

Hi Here is a link to an article I published a year or so ago about creating a good soil mix for raised beds. I use this in mine and find it a great growing medium. I basically well rotted horse manure, soil, used peat and coir in roughly equal quantities and then add to it with home made compost in ...

Re: Sowing carrot seed

Hi I usually sow (and grow) carrots in a block system in raised beds. It is divided into small plots with wires and I often plant 36 seeds in a 12 inch square mini plot. It is hard to get 1 seed in a planting hole but I thin them out when they have germinated. I usually thin them out later as well t...

Re: The Perfect Tomato

My Mum loves Roma which she grew from plants I gave her the other year. Last year she had a bad crop due to blight and lost them all, but the toms in her greenhouse fared much better than mine. They were Shirley as I usually get a good crop of nice tasting Toms from these. Never really compared the ...

Re: Sowing chilli seeds now?

Hi I started some Thai chillies on Boxing Day and they seem to be doing well if a little slow due to the lack of heat/light. Growing them on the kitchen windowsill. Did this to try and get a longer growing season. They are from seed saved from last years crop (sown in late Feb). I got 4 ripe red chi...

Hi

As it will soon be Christmas, beg, borrow or steal all your neighbours real christmas trees and shred them.

Use the shreddings as a mulch and this will add acidity

Try buying a bale of straw to use as a brown source. Bales are small enough to transport in a car boot but remember to use a dust sheet otherwise you will end up cleaning bits of straw out for weeks.

I can sweep the back of my estate car out with ease so I do not have any problems.
