Re: Onions in polytunnel
Hi Chicken 4 - do try it I was pleased with the ones I did last year, None bolted - but it was a poor summer. Today I just planted my left over sets very closely in pt to give me 'spring onions' - seed had not germinated well. I did the same with some of the autumn sets & just harvested those a...

Re: Onions in polytunnel
This is really interesting - I thought about putting onions in my PT but thought they would bolt from the heat. Please let us know how you get on. I might just do a tiny row of 10 sets just to see how they get on. I do know of another person who put the winter sets in the PT last winter (2007) and t...

Re: tyres on allotments
hi chicken 4 they are trying to ban tyres but meeting some resistance.we are self managed which i think creates some personal confrontation.complaining to the council seemed so much easier.that said our commitee are great and do such a lot of good work though they can be a little slow to change,cha...

Re: tyres on allotments
Oh no that it a real pain. Although we did rid of the tyres on our site we are having trouble clearing a site 9two plots next to each other that a chap had for 40 years he planted thick trees in most of it. It's being cleared now and I can't tell you the rubbish and polluting paints etc we've found....

Re: How early do you plant in the polytunnel
Chicken4 Welcome to polytunnel growing (by the way, Johnboy's advice is invaluable, based on years of experience). I hope you do well this summer with all your crops. On a more positive note than my last post: start thinking/planning ahead. A tunnel is marvellous over winter. Try a search on winter...

Re: How early do you plant in the polytunnel
Allan & John thanks, It's my first proper spring with the polytunnel and knowing that my PT is very cold at night I'm pleased I questioned the suggestions made by the garden magazines in aiding very early crops. I think I had better trust my own knowledge a bit more than beliving everything I re...

How early do you plant in the polytunnel
How early do you all plant things like
courgette
tomato
peppers
french beans
sweetcorn
in the polytunnel.
Our night time temp is around 6 degrees at the moment so i was planning on transplanting the courgette and french beans next month.

Night time temp in polytunnels - help
How much warmer than outside is my PT likely to be at night. It has a thermal cover, and it isn’t too exposed. The night temps this week have been around 6 degrees It’s a pain at the moment as in the day is really warm but I realise it takes a nose dive at night. As the PT is on the plot, I can’t po...

Re: tyres on allotments
Last year we had a similar problem on our site. Some guy had over 50.
We listed them on our local freecycle. We'll we ended up with more request for them than we had tyres. Within three days all the tyres had gone.
Try it, lots of people want to try growing tatties in them

Re: planting in beds which suffered from an attack of blight
Hi Chicken4, The host of blight mycelium is the potato not the tomato. If you cleared all the debris from last years plants I do not see any reason why you should not grow tomatoes in the soil. If you grew potatoes in the tunnel last year then so long as you do not use the same area they too should...

Re: Waist high strawberries
4 tier Mini greenhouse frame - grow on the 2nd and 4th shelf. About 8 to 10 plants in a growbag on each shelf.
You'll get a fantastic crop in a very small place and if grown outside it's really easy to net it to protect against the birds.

planting in beds which suffered from an attack of blight
The tomatos in the polytunnel were lost to blight so does that mean I can't plant in those beds this year. I've tooped up the beds with min. of 4 inches of well rotted organic cows manure. Should I plant the tomatoes in pots and growbags and would this also be the case for chiited spuds that are rea...

Re: forcing strawberries
Gosh that's good.
The stock for the strawberry bed came from 1/2 reduced pots of strawberry plants from the local garden centre in November so maybe I could go back and get some more and put straight into the tunnel. They have big pots for £2.00 , maybe just get a couple
