Blighted tomatoes
Just found blight on my tomato plants so have ripped all the plants up but saved the unripe fruit.
If the fruit looks unblemished, is it ok to make green tomato chutney with it so that it isn't a complete loss?
Anyone tried this before?
Many thanks.

Growing mushrooms - holes or no holes?
I plan to grow some mushrooms in a wooden box. I have looked in several gardening books but none state whether or not there should be holes drilled into the bottom of the box. Anyone out there have experience either way?
Many thanks,
Zoe

Re: Peat-free compost and thrips
Thanks Elaine. The little critters seemed to be more prevalent when the compost was dry but perhaps they were more active or noticeable then. I will take your advice though and ensure that the compost never gets too damp. Cheers.

Peat-free compost and thrips
I have been using peat-free compost for just over a year with good results. Over the same period, I have been seeing thrips (or whatever those annoying tiny flying black insects are called) around my potted plants and seedlings. I have recently sorted the problem by using stickers that attract and t...

Re: Replanting Jeruslam Artichokes
Thank you! I seem to think that I have been very careful to dig them all out and that there are none left behind to regrow, but I have thought the same thing when digging up my spuds. There are always a few volunteers around to pull up.

Replanting Jeruslam Artichokes
I have some Jerusalem artichokes growing on my plot and would like to harvest most of them to make soup this weekend. I'd like to replant some of the tubers in Feb for a harvest this time next year and give some tubers to some friends. Any advice on the best way to store tubers for 2-3 weeks? Would ...

Re: Purslane seed
I think I bought some last year from a Jekka's Herb Farm stall in Bristol. The 2009 catalogue suggests that you can order the seeds as part of a salad herb selection. The website suggests you can order the seed on its own.

Optimism for figs
That's a great tip. Many thanks. I have a young fig plant with two small (just over an inch probably) figs and was thinking of removing them in line with the advice I had read recently. I think I removed a couple last year so was beginning to think that I would never actually get to eat any figs fro...

Blight in Worcestershire
Unfortunately, I seem to have the start of blight on my main crops . There is a picture on my blog http://plot35.blogspot.com/ . No yellow outlines or white bloom though. Yesterday, I removed as many damaged leaves as possible. Has anyone tried this before? The spuds need a few more weeks to mature ...

Sorry for taking so long to respond. I think that it might have been powdery mildew probably due to the humid conditions in the mini-greenhouse they grew up in. Lesson learned - next time I should put the tomatoes outside during warm weather. Thanks for the advice everyone. I am pleased I found this...

Thank you
Thank you so much, Chantal. Any advice would be welcome.
I am not normally such a worrier but I am planning on giving away some of my plants and I don't want to pass anything nasty on. I have started to harden the plants off during the day so maybe that will sort them out one way or the other.

Yellow blotches on tomato leaves
Hi there. I'm new here so here goes... I have a dozen or so tomato plants in a mini-greenhouse at the side of the house. A couple of leaves on two or three of the plants have a yellow-ish, almost rectangular patch. No dark halos seen. It might be that these leaves have been in constant contact with ...
