Re: Leeks grown in tubes??
Some leeks grow longer without earthing up and I don't bother.for eating leeks . However for show leeks I use black damp coursing plastic obtained from builders merchants.

Re: What to try this year?
I have grown Kestrel for the last 3 years and think they are a first rate potato. They have been slug free and only the odd one showed blight on the foliage when neighbouring crops were badly affected. It is a second early but crops as heavily as a maincrop and is an excellent cooker as well as bein...

Re: Onion Sets
As you already have the sets they are probably overwintering types. They should have been in the end of autumn. If you have access to a greenhouse or cold frame I would try planting them in plastic cups and plant them outside in early spring. It is worth a try as they won't keep till next autumn.

Re: Whitefly
When my brassicas become infested I mix a spray up and walk along the rows kicking the base of each plant. When the whitefly swarm in the air I give them a good spraying. I prefer this to spraying the plants.I spray every week until I am on top of them.

Re: hydrated lime
As my plot is heavily infested with clubroot I use a lot of lime and I always buy builders lime. After watering my brassicas in I always give a good dusting around the base of the stems as I think this deters root fly.I have never known hydrated lime burn a plant.

Re: club root on cabbages
I use builders lime on my allotment for club root. I give a good dusting along the rows before planting and then dust inside each planting hole. It does not scorch the plants and I think it helps to deter root fly. If I don't follow this procedure my brassicas only last weeks.

Re: Rust on leeks
It is true with the onset of winter rust will die off on leeks and the worst affected outer flags can be binned. However a lot of organic gardeners believe a couple of summer feeds with a high potash fertiliser will help to prevent rust. I find darker coloured leeks are less prone to rust. I grow Wi...

Re: Clubroot resistant sprouts and broccoli
Hi! Andy, My allot. is rife with club root and the only resistant veg I have found are Kilaton and Kilaxy cabbages , Clapton caulis.and Marion swedes. I still grow sprouts and calabrese by using heavy doses of lime but I followed a tip in a magazine and I use builders lime and not garden lime as it ...

Re: Rotting leeks
If you give your leeks a couple of autumn feeds with a high potash fertiliser( any tomato feed will do) this will make them hardier and more resistant to rust and less likely to rot.

Provado does kill off RSM. I spray my P/Tunnels every month at first sign of attack. I also spray the leaves of cues every day with plain water.

Re: Molehils
The molehills should de ideal for mixing in with compost. You could try putting moth balls in their runs for the smell to deter them. If you water your lawn with a sulphate of ammonia mixture it will feed the grass and help to chase off worms which is what the moles are after.

Re: Sweet potatoe cuttings.
I don't know about overwintering sweet potato cuttings but you can buy a sweet potato from the shops in march and treat it like you would a dahlia tuber and take fresh cuttings.
