Passata

I keep seeing references to passata for tomatoes. I have made so much soup, sauce and splodge (splodge is what I make out of anything to hand to go with the tomatoes and freeze it to use as a pasta sauce). I would like to try something different. Does anyone have a recipe I could follow or is it jus...

I am sure you have all been waiting bated breath to see if I have any beans! Well glad to report that flowers and beans are now appearing very satisfactorily. I have since read somewhere that if you give them too much water before the flowers appear that can lead to lots of green at the expense of f...

Thanks Chantal, I will try Morrisons later. I might as well try with the rosehips I've got in the garden. Nothing to lose except perhaps a case of horrible poisoning leading to a very painful and lingering death!

Hi Chantal
I'd like to have a go at this. I have lots of rose hips growing wild in the garden. Just 2 questions -
1. Can you use any rosehips?
2. What on earth is Certo?
Thanks
Polly

Hi The soil outside is a reasonable clay for about 12 inches, then underneath it is heavy clay. In the tunnel the soil is much finer and quite sandy. I am trying to grow organically so please relate any advice to suitable ideas, thanks. I don't know how rotted the manure is, I have just seen it for ...

Sorry, I am getting my 'Johns' mixed up. John - There was nothing growing there before apart from weeds. When we moved in last September the whole area was completely overgrown with nettles, thistles, bindweed etc. We cleared it and didn't add anything to the soil at all, so whatever is in there is ...

Compost & manure - what where?

I have just read the thread about making compost and picked up a few well needed tips, thanks. Now, my next problem as a complete novice is what do I put where? By that I mean, I am growing in outside beds and a poly tunnel and my question is when do I add compost/manure to the beds inside and out a...

Hi John Believe it or not I haven't fed them at all because they looked so good and I was waiting for flowers to appear. Perhaps I should have been feeding them? I gave them some comfrey tea yesterday in between very heavy showers so that should be soaked in now. I just keep looking and hoping! Pol

Ok thanks Angie. I seem to have done something right then - sounds like I may have some beans when other things are finishing. As a newish grower I am still struggling to get the 'what to do when' right!

Where's the flowers?

I have some 'Or du Rhin' climbing french beans bought this year from the Real Seed Catalogue. They are growing really well and have reached well over 6foot and are lovely and green and healthy. But there are no flowers or any sign of flowers. Does anyone know if this is normal - are they so late tha...

When I moved in during autumn the first thing I planted was garlic and onions. I didn't realise until the weather turned that I had planted them in the worst possible place - waterlogged a lot of the winter and heavy and infested with mares tail! However I have just harvested some of the best onions...

Glad to read these comments about swift - I thought it was just my bad luck that they are disappointing. Will try something different next year.
