tomato seedling have died

what might i have done wrong?? i planted some seed for my toms, they germinated and grew but they have all died. i dont think i have over watered them and they are not outside yet.

using last years compost

is it ok to use compost that i used last year?? it has some roots from veg grown in it last year. could i put some feed or chicken poop in it to get it going ( i have some chiiks so i have lots of chicken poop available)

i am very excited, i have never really grown veg before apart from some spuds and toms, last weekend i planted some leek seeds and i have my first sproutings. heehee easily pleased!! :D
