Cordyline problems

I have several codylines and the one's that I have planted on my allotments are about 10 feet tall. About 2 years the ago the leaves on just one on of the four that I have at the top of my plots started to turn yellow from the bottom upwards and it eventually died. I was never sure if it was poisone...
