many lawn mowers now have 12 volt lead acid batteries to start the engine . A solar panel charger connected to the battery over winter will keep it in good condition ready to start the mower in the spring.

While agreeing in principle you do't qualify it with what size solar panel and whether it is on all the winter. It is possible even in winter to over-charge a battery with gassing, loss of fluid and terminal corrosion. If you can afford an extra £14 you can get a regulator that protects the battery against this, that's half the price of a new battery but you've got that bit for keeps.
