ASPARAGUS SEEDLINGS

I have some asparagus plants that I grew very successfully from seed in my cold greenhouse, they were sewn in March this year. I have brought them on in square four inch pots, I have made a bed for them with lots of well rotted FYM and Compost slightly raised to allow for the drainage they like (five crowns from mail order that I shared with a friend are doing well there) Should i put these plants out now, do they need any more protection, how big should the ferns get once planted out??

A good way to add to your stock cheaply compo, it's satisfying growing them from seed. My asparagus ferns are somewhere between eighteen inches and two feet now, if the ground is moist I think they will be fine If we are in for another hard winter some protection might help as a few of us lost some crowns in the last hard winter. Mine will get more compost/ manure in autumn and a cover of straw.
ps Are there cats near? You might need to protect them from cats scratching them up, cats are partial to digging in that sort of well tended rich soil.

PS I checked the height today and they are taller than I remembered about 3 ft + now.
When I had a new allotment, being a beginner, I planted the seed direct in the soil and surprisingly they did very well.
