Whilst working on the allotment this morning a lad from Bangladesh approached and asked what I had planted,what types and which seed companies I used.I was not the first to be approached,he had been talking to others on the site learning as much as he can about our site whilst clearing his plot.
When he had gone an idle thought came to mind:-what is he going to do about manure?Knowing that cattle are sacred on the Sub-continent would he be allowed to use FYM on his plot or would he,on religious grounds,be banned?I'll ask him when next we meet.
Coincidently,there is a article in the latest K.G.on a Bangladeshi community and no mention of them using manure.

Fear not. You are getting your religions mixed up. Your Bangladeshi plotholder will be Muslim and therefore not hold the cow in either reverence or revulsion. It is Hindus who have special views about cows; but they are not actually "sacred"; just killing them is taboo. The family cow is the producer of milk, cheese, ghee, urine and dung, the last two used as fertiliser among other things.

As far as I know, animal manure is used across the sub-continent by hindu, muslim, sikh and christian alike.

Have you seen the send a cow keyhole gardens, very simple and helpful in alleviating hunger in such areas. Why not send one and help.

Hi NB,
I donated two goats to Farm Africa a few years ago and regularly donate to them. A very worthwhile project. I do not generally donate to people who fly post me because that is the begging bowl method but with Farm Africa they keep you well informed as to what is going on. They have made some real forward strides to alleviate some of the hardships.
