Our asparagus beds need topping up, as the soil level has sunk a bit over the years. I thought I would combine this with feeding them after their exertions. I will stop cutting at the end of the month, as I started much earlier than usual.

I had a look in the compost bins, which were filled mostly with chicken poo + straw, leafy stuff, and windfall apples. They havent rotted down to compost yet, but look like well rotted manure. Good idea to put a layer of this on, followed by topping up with soil, do you think?

I wait till the autumn when the fern is cut down and then add a good thick layer of well rotted compost. 4-6" or so you can. I do this every year, it protects the crowns from the harsh winter winter weather and also keeps the soil levels up.

I do the same as Beryl. autumn manure, and top with straw.

Thanks Beryl and NB. I'll wait until the autumn then, and it will give the compost more time to cook.
