A truly shocking revelation on last night's Panorama, of what can happen once you have (responsibly?) sent your "refuse" to recycling.

I suspect that a lot more similar shifting of our rubbish to other continents goes on behind the scenes than we are prepared to know.

I seem to remember a similar investigation a few years ago, then recycled stuff ended up in India, and a similar hazard, obviously they are taking time getting to grips with this problem.

I asked what our recycling dump did with the electrical equipment and they said that a lot of it went to prisons for them to take to bits or repair or generally learn about. I can't imagine this would make much of a dent in the mountain of electrical equipment disposed of yearly.

It is good to think that the authorities are doing something to prosecute and stop all the dodgy practices, but what an enormous problem.

This morning we have been trying to get rid of an old-style G-plan sideboard - in good condition - to various charities for them to sell. Heart foundation didn't want it - too many already - likewise with various other organisations - we've already got 12 in our warehouse, said one. Fortunately it looks likely that the furniture recycling scheme may take it.

The Heart Foundation people did take an old laptop, but although I have taken an 80 Gb hard disc drive, some memory and 3.5 inch drive out of the old desktop computer, the rest will go to the dump, no doubt to add to the 3rd world mountain - or maybe not. Who really knows?

I'm, surprised at that Colin, I thought 70's furniture was 'in' now.
Have you tried your local Don'tdumpthat?

Thanks Beryl but dontdumpit in Wales - nearest Cardiff - has 0 topics and 0 replies and seems to deal just in the sort of recycling that you normally do with your weekly waste.

freecycle might find a home for it.
