Holes in my boots!

I have a really, really comfy pair of wellington boots but they have holes! It might seem like the wrong time of year to talk of wellies but I also wear them on hot days if I'm digging!
There are splits in the seams which have got bigger and let too much water or sludgy mud in now (or dust on dry days!) - they won't last another winter (have had them for six years) - does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could seal/fix the holes?
Thank you for any help or advice offered.

I had the same problem and used rubber sealant (from the bicycle shop) and plastic. Lasted for quite a while but then split in a different place, so I filled them up with compost and planted nasturtiums in them

Chuck them away if you value your toes!
I don't know what others think but I would advise against wearing wellies for working on the veg plot. They don't give your feet any protection from spade and forks. We always wear steel toed workboots or rigger boots. They give good protection when mowing as well.

Very good point John - will take that advice especially as my sister put a garden fork through her foot when she was very young!
Diane - thanks - I will do this and keep the boots for lighter work and dog walking.
Shallot Man - I would look really daft walking around with tyres on the soles of my boots

Hi John,
I am with you all the way and I wear steel capped boots and never wear Wellies for anything. My boots are the most comfortable footwear I own.
I had gout last year and couldn't even wear my slippers but managed to get my boots on because the steel caps prevent any pressure on the foot. They are marvelous.

Garden Mum. I don't know, recall just after WW2 we exported second hand car tyres to Africa, they cut and used the tread for shoes.

JohnBoy I will definitely get some steel toe caps, especially if they're comfy!
Well, ShallotMan, that's interesting! I did a little search on the web and found that tyres are still being used - that's one way of recycling them!
Peter - great music that was, doesn't seem to be played on the radio any more..
