Where do squashes come in the rotating cycle? in the past I grew them in a separate part of the plot which I now have covered with black plastic. There will be space where potatoes grew last year would that be suitable?.

I grow mine on heavily manured ground.
1 Squashes
2 All other stuff, except.
3 Potatoes

Dear Bren,
squashes are not part of the traditional rotations that we are used to in the UK. However this is a rotation that I use to include them in a rotation. Spring year one add as much organic matter as you can to your soil and grow your squashes. In the Autumn when the squash bed is empty plant autumn onions, shallots and garlic. These will be ready to harvest by mid summer the following year when you can put in sprouting broccoli winter/spring cabbage and brussels sprouts. When these have finished in May plant squashes again.
This is a short rotation but it makes the most of a given piece of land.
