Thought for the day - Friday 19th Nov 2010

"To go to the greenhouse when the weather is wild, to close the door, to stand and listen to the wind outside, to the rain that slashes the frail roof, to see, through the misted glass, the black, storm-tossed branches of distant elms, to take a deep breath, to savour to the full the strange and almost uncanny peace which this frail tenement creates ... to me this is one of the truest joys which life has given."

Beverley Nichols, Down The Garden Path.

Less of a mistake than you might think, Beverly "played for the other team".

Peter - you really make me wish I had a greenhouse. I could escape out there with a book, a cup of tea, the hurricane lamp and the rain lashing down on the windows to get away from the ****** football on TV.

Could be quite useful for growing seedlings in too.

Still, I suppose I could always shut myself in the car inside the garage but then I might have to share the silence with the pattering of tiny furry feet and little grey whiskers!

When we still had a TV (many moons ago) and the children were in their teens, my OH and I turned our bedroom into a "den" where we could sit and read and listen to music without watching the box. The moment the offspring flew the nest, we got rid of the TV and reclaimed the downstairs. Peace and enjoyment.

I knew it was an old quote by the mention of Elms -I don't think I have seen one since the great old tree on our school field was cut down because of the disease...

Dear OH, I assumed too!

Handle

every stressful

situation
like a dog.
If you can't eat it or play with it,
Just pee on it and walk away.
