It's another sunny day so I was doing a spot of weeding and noticed some of my saffron crocus are in flower, so I have started harvesting my first crop of Saffron, I only planted them a short time ago and hadn't expected much till next year They are autumn flowering, look pretty and as the saffron is so expensive to buy this harvest is a real bonus!

Glad you've got a crop NB. I saw them advertised earlier this year and almost bought some but decided against it as I couldn't think of a good place to put them. I know you're a lot further south than me, but what conditions do you think would suit them best?

I think well drained and a sunny spot Plumpudding, I put a little sand under them, and the front garden has a downward slope. When my children were small we often holidayed in Mevagissey in cornwall, the bakery there made the most delicious saffron loaf, in one of those old fashioned in the wall ovens !

Dear Nature's Babe, i've got a brick bread oven built into one of my brick barns, although i have never used it in all the years i have lived here.

I too love Mevaggisey, full of charm.

Hi OH, My childrens grandfather lived in a small fishermans cottage by the harbour in Mevagissey. Folk would come and put their casseroles in the oven after the baker had made the bread. When we lived in Jersey, the cottage we lived in had a brick oven too.
