summer must be over the kids are back at school... been enough rain to make the grass grow... got the mower this week for the first time since mid june,

Yes, definitely over. We dismanted our summer gazebo on Monday which has been up since early June - (just before the heavens opened fortunately) - and it's now gathering cobwebs in storage until next summer.
By that time we will have forgotten how to erect it again and the usual friendly domestic arguments will no doubt ensue
We normally try to avoid putting on our central heating until October 1st but the evenings suddenly do seem to getting rather chilly.
Meanwhile those darned cucumbers and courgettes STILL KEEP COMING !
We won't be having a Last Night of the Proms party in this house but we may well be having a celebration for THE LAST COURGETTE.

That makes me smile!
My husband says that too and he has never lived anywhere near the Welsh border! He worked on a farm in the Yorkshire Wolds for ten years and he said it was widely used there. When we first met, (only a few years ago) and I heard him say that, I giggled for ages. It makes perfect sense to me!
I love the old expressions, which are sadly dying out now. We should start a new topic about them...anyone care to start it off?
