Not quite as kitchen garden as potatoes, I know, but even more important for food security.

It will be interesting to see the opponents of GM react to "macro-assisted selection".

Hi Alan,
This is not GM but a different form of gene technology which is still going to take years and years to complete and show any results.
I suspect that the GM companies have already had the gene sequence of Wheat for some time.
JB.

Hi Johnboy
Yes I understood that. I was just wondering about the panic reaction from the usual quarters generated whenever that little word "gene" is mentioned
Alan
Hi Alan,
I quite agree with you. The very mention of the word "gene" causes all sorts of twitches from some quarters.
To these inwardly thinking people "Science" is a bad word and should be avoided at all costs! I just term them as "Sado's (spelling?)
It is of this method that the scientists say that the current GM Potato Trial could be achieved by normal hybridizing but would take many years and countless trials. I wonder how much government money they would manage to waste! Of course to the twitchers the money would be well spent however much it cost. It's called Organic Mathematics!
On the farming programme, BBC radio four 5.45am Mon-Fri this morning, it was explained that by using this method the various genes can be identified and marked and certain traits noticed for trial and certainly this would shorten the process but from the trial process to actually having anything meaningful would still take many many moons.
