Carrots are getting to a decent size now. There are 3 different varieties here: Chantennay Red Cored, Early Nantes & Flyaway. The spring onion (White Lisbon) is a whopper!

Dear Piglet6, i should think you are very proud of your little babies, and so you should be.

OH, yes, I am - definitely. I'm chuffed to bits with how (almost) everything has done/is doing.

You will have to forgive me, it IS my first year doing this 'for real' (as in, not 'helping' my parents when I was a little'un). The novelty of showing everyong who stays still long enough piccies of my veggies will, I have no doubt, wear off very soon.

However, I doubt the novelty of coming back indoors with beautiful carrots, perfect lettuce leaves, fragrant runner beans and tomatoes will ever wear off. At least I sincerely hope it won't.

Dear Piglet6, i still enjoy the things you listed above, as much now as i did when i first started growing things as a young boy, and i would say others on the forum are the same.

A very pleasurable hobby indeed, infact it becomes a way of life, if you are lucky.

I am pleased to tell you that my name is now on the waiting list for an allotment. Unfortunately the waiting is long, VERY long. I'm no.65 on it! BUT, I would be waiting a darned sight longer if I don't put my name on it at all !!

Apparently there a 4 sights in the town, the largest of which is the one at the end of my road (which has 27 half-plots).

The lady I spoke with said the allotment association are having their Annual Show today, so I'm probably going to take a wander (it's in the next village) and see what other people have been growing. Might pick up some useful tips too.
