I think in the Americanese language, they call maize, corn. Perhaps they also call wheat, corn. It is such a shame that the English language has been so affected by the media and business adopting the Americanese distortion of English. For example in my day a billion was a million million and not a thousand million.

When we refer to corn fields, we can mean barley, oats and wheat.

I'm not sure what you mean, I mean that historically corn referred to all cereals. Cornfields are fields that grow cereals.

Sorry didn't mean to be controversial I was just followng on from Alan's quiz - that often our language is a bit strange! I meant that we didn't grow corn in a corn field. Does corn count as a cereal or is it a vegetable?

The former. Cereals are members of Poacea, formerly Gramineae (i.e. grasses).

Vegetable is a cultural, catch-all word for certain sorts of edibles. So Sweetcorn is also a vegetable, though I doubt if maize could be counted as one.
