Late shallots

Has anyone tried planting shallots now and achieved a crop?
I pulled the ripe shallots over the weekend and, as we really appreciate immature fresh shallots as an alternative to bunching onions, thought I might give the experiment a try. It is well-nigh impossible to get hold of shallots to plant now, but fortunately we still have the remains of a string we bought from Sioni Winwns (Onion Johnny) in the spring. Long Breton shallots with no sign of softness or sprouting.
I planted six in modules to get some root before planting, so now it's wait and see time.

Hi Alan. We have thought about the same thing but haven't got around to trying it, so I will be interested to find out how your late shallots fare. Would you keep us posted please?

Update: eight weeks later and, although five of the six put out roots, they steadfastly refuse to put up green shoots. Experiment terminated - not to be repeated

Hi Alan,
Basically what you are saying is that you like Scallions. These are onion in the green and are much appreciated in the Netherlands and I suspect that they grow onions from seed and pull them early.
As you can now grow Shallots from seed I suspect that several sowings throughout the year may satiate your craving!

It's not a craving - just use a lot. Fortunately I have a superabundance of Japanese and Italian bunching onions. The shallots were just an experiment.

And round here as well! All green shallots, bunching onions and spring onions are referred to as slotsh - the Welsh approximate pronunciation of shallots. Much used with new potatoes and buttermilk.
