I heard my first cuckoo today, sounded happy to be here !

Dear Natures Babe, we have a few calling to each other from the woods, that are dotted around the village.

I guess you need to be near a bit of woodland Shallotman, I love to hear the woodpeckers too.
Old herbacious, mostly coppiced woodland here but a lot of mature trees in the hedgerows.

We had our first on the 5th but on Wednesday we spotted one calling as it flew over us.

from my husband: this is not a cuckoo this is a hedge sparrow or commonly named Dunnock and is very small.

Cuckoo are about the size of a collared dove and barred.

Haven't heard one here yet. I'm in Ambridge most evenings and haven't heard one there either.

Geoff - I think I'm right in saying that cuckoos only call when they are in flight.

Perhaps there are just as many Cuckoos as there always were but natural selection is favouring the quiet ones that don't warn their victims that they are about.
