"Industrial scale" market gardening

I know it's not really news any more, but I came across this story today and it made me smile about how this goes on whilst we try to coax a half a dozen tomatoes to produce our Summer salads.

Does the commentary on this page seem crazy to you? I thought this only happened on illicit weed farms in the West Country :)

Poor bees, one of the reasons for the decline of bees is that with monoculture they are not getting a varied diet, its like asking us to live on just carrots, or just tomatoes, man can be so stupid !

Colin, yes it does seem totally crazy, before global warming I can remember having home grown tomatoes till christmas, i used to wrap the still green tomatoes in newspaper and pop them in a draw to ripen, adding a banana, if I wanted them to ripen quickly.
