Hi folks. In a couple of weeks I'll be sowing a couple of Cucumber seed, female. My plan was to plant them (once they've germinated) straight into my greenhouse border. However, I've just read that they SHOULDN'T be planted into the border, rather into growbags or large pots. Any thoughts ?
Cheers...freddy.

Have had mine in the border and in fact in the ground over recent years, the best advice here is plenty of humus, such as well rotted manure, garden compost etc in the ground and of course they need warmth and protection from frost or very cold weather....

If I am not on the plot, I am not happy.........
Hi Freddy. I used to grow my cucumbers in pots but as my greenhouse is on our allotment, (which isn't just around the corner
) I had problems keeping them sufficiently watered in hot weather. As a result, I have planted them in the border of the greenhouse for the last four years and had no problems at all...brilliant yields in fact. Two all female plants produced far more cucumbers than we needed so friends and neighbours were well pleased!
I have two borders and never grow them on the same side two years running, and always add plenty of well rotted manure, as Compo said.
Give it a go!
Cheers.

I don't grow greenhouse cucumbers, but I do grow ridge cucumbers in my small greenhouse. Each year I put 3 plants into the border, at 3 corners. I usually dig out the soil and replace it with fresh home-made compost plus some well-rotted manure.
I have had lovely outdoor cucumbers from this indoor method, while the ones I've grown outdoors have struggled to produce anything at all. One tip I have read, perhaps on this forum, is that they don't like to be w atered deep, so i don't put a plastic pipe next to them, like with tomatoes, but water on the surface of the soil.
