Evening N.B.
Found this site on Google, curious about as Ihave not heard of it before:-http://www.laurelfarmherbs.co.uk/herbcatalogue/details.php?plantid=185
If it grows to 18 inches then it may be that is how far apart they are planted also.

Snooky thank you, apparently if you garden near the sea they are saline tolerant too.

Morning NB

I have grown Salsola/Liscari once (and that was enough?). It's not a matter of how tall it grows, as once beyond about 6 inches high it is pretty inedible.

It is salt tolerant because it is a saltmarsh plant closely related to glasswort.

Joy Larkcom, Oriental Vegetables makes these comments.

According to information on Japanese seed packets it can be grown on fairly poor soil; it grows more vigorously on alkaline soil. The first sowings are made under cover in spring. Seed is sown in rows or broadcast, then thinned to about 6cm apart. It is ready for harvesting within a month of germination. I have to add that I have attempted to grow Salsola several times, but have never succeeded in getting the seed to germinate. A Japanese visitor told me that the seed loses its viability rapidly, and that in Japan seed is kept at a temperature of 5C before sowing in winter, and 5-15C before sowing in summer.

Thank you Alan, looks like a bit of a non starter, if I do manage to get some to germinate will remember to harvest while still tender.
