Does size matter ?

Hi folks. A few weeks back I bought some seed spuds, Arran Pilot. Although it was a 21/2 KG bag, there were only 15 seed. Some of them are quite large and I was wondering, is there an optimum size ? Or, does it make no difference ?

Cheers...freddy.

Hi Freddy,
The optimum size for a seed spud is about the same size as a hens egg and consider that yours must be considerably over that size. If I were you I would take them back and demand a refund and buy elsewhere!

Hi Johnboy, thanks for the reply. Taking them back isn't really an option, as I bought them when I was 'out and about', the GC being around 35 miles away. So, I need to get some more ? I was thinking it might be a bit late for that ?

Cheers...freddy.

This may be totally wrong so I hope someone can correct me if it is but I think I heard somewhere that you can cut larger seed potatoes into pieces. Tattieman?

My mother (going back tears ago) always cut potatoes in section, making sure that there were eyes in all pieces before putting them to chit, there was a big field to fill so she needed alot, she always got a good crop.

I have always cut large seed potatoes but only at the planting stage.

Hi Barney and Glallotments,
If you decide to cut your potatoes in half, as was done back in the years when seed potatoes were not available, then it should be done just before planting and the cut should be sealed with Flowers of Sulphur.

.My Arron Pilot seed potatoes are exactly the opposite of Freddie's. 48 potatoes in a 3KG bag. As you can see some of them are quite small. Should I plant 2 small ones together or plant them all singly.

Hi folks, thanks for the replies. I just wanted to clear something up (in case it wasn't apparent). 15 seed is enough for my needs, what I was driving at was, will large tubers produce a decent crop ?

Cheers...freddy.
