Growing Avocado Trees From Seed

Whenever I buy an avocado I always put the seed in an old hyacinth glass.
And every so often one eventually takes root...

And that is where I am now :D
I have a shoot about 6 inches tall... I know I am now supposed to plant it up in a peat free soil etc and keep it indoors as it is a tropical plant...
But what I was wondering is...

Has anyone else done this? And more importantly...

Any tips?

I've had very mixed success over the years. One of the best was from a fruit bought back from the West Indies. Eventually we had to ask my mother in law look after it whilst we went on holiday and it died :(

We had one around 4 feet high last year so put it out in the garden border where it thrived. As winter came, I cocooned it in straw inside a plastic mini-greenhouse. However I'm not optimistic after the sharp frosts we had this winter....
