How far away should cross-pollinating trees be from each other? The books and articles which I have read always seem to say "nearby".What is "nearby",5 yards,50 yards,or what?

Fruit trees,Johnboy.I am thinking of planting a plum and there are plum/greengage trees 50 yards or so from where I intend planting it .If they will act as pollinaters then it will give a better choice of variety to plant.Unfortunately only room for one.
