I have placed an order too...for a DVD..I felt I just had to see the TV series again.......

Morning Clive, i was very lucky in getting the boxed set for Christmas.

The DVD box set arrived today...and I have just re-acquainted myself with the TV series....with I have to say a tear in my eye as we watched the introductory episode.
We then took in January and February too....

When this series was made, 1987 ??, I would have still been working in the garden machinery world...little knowing then that by 1992 I would be at work within a walled kitchen garden and the associated grounds of a large country house.

The episode with the slab under a fruit tree hit a chord with our work today....
We had today to remove an old Crab Apple at the front of the Hall....a sad day.....it has been degrading for several years now and got a reprieve a few years back....but last summer the whole North side main branch died and its removal would leave it badly one sided and unacceptably weak trunked...so it had had its day...

On digging it out sure enough under the centre of the stump was a slate that it had been set on when planted....

..and tonight via the DVD there was Harry Dodson relating the story of the slab under a fruit tree...

I had done the same this lunchtime in conversation with our trainee and volunteer who were helping with the task today.......

The old stump hole has been returned to lawn and a new clean location readied for a new Crab Apple maiden that is in stock ready.....but with slate or without......??

There's not many people that i thought i would liked to have met in person but, Harry Dodson was certainly one of those. He aways came across as such a Gentleman, but always had that twinkle of mischief in his eyes.

Afternoon Kevin, well i've got the twinkle of mischief in my eyes, now i've just got to work on the Gentleman bit.

But do you have the requisite hat and coat Old H'...??

I remember a lot of the series but have somehow seen much more into it this time around...we plan to take in another couple of episodes this evening.

I knew the site was operated by Harry as a nursery business but did not recall seeing the large modern glasshouses that were shown in the introduction when I watched it years ago....they were in the larger square enclosure to the East of the section used for the series.

The restoration was in reality a for TV makeover and after the series it seems it went back to its slumbers...hinted at in the last few pages of the book...oops. ...hope John P has read that far.

In an obituary to Harry Dodson there is mention of the series starting the upsurge of interest in the world of walled kitchen gardens once more.. It certainly added to my fascination of such gardens.

I did check out the site via Google map recently...can't recall how up to date it was..perhaps 2006.?..and it all looked very sad......

We have just watched the March and April episodes..seems the weather pattern of the filming year was a little like this year....

Don't say that Clive, if i remember correctly, after the very wet start, they had a long drought period too.

I just love the introduction music.

We are limiting ourselves to 2 episodes an evening...so will have to see what May and June does another night.. ...

I'm going to have to watch a couple of episodes now Clive, the trouble is they are very addictive, so i'll probably end up watching them all again over the next week, i suppose.

I forgot to say in my last reply, Clive, i do have the requisite coat and hat, but they are as good as new as they have yet to be used.
