I've tried and tried but all the files are WAY too large. I'm obviously doing something wrong but don't know what? Can anyone tell me how to do it please?

Good luck Piglet6....despite excellent advice and idiot proof instruction from very knowledgeable folk on here, I still haven't managed it a year later. But then, technology is definitely not my forte. It might as well be written in Greek!

Dear Elaine, you're certainly not alone, i have to rely on others when i swop my avatar.

I don't know if you have looked at the requirements, under User Control Panel Profile Edit Avatar, but they are :

Maximum dimensions; width: 120 pixels, height: 120 pixels, file size: 11.86 KiB.

So you select your picture and find an editor that lets you resize - I use Photoshop but if you have a digital camera it may have come with a package like Photoshop Elements that you could use - then do a Save As and upload it with the Browse button.
There are also free online methods, I've never tried them but here is one :

Is an Avatar a picture?

I think it is called that if it's a chosen picture under your chosen name.

Old Definitions :

1. A new embodiment of a familiar idea.
2. The manifestation of a Hindu deity (especially Vishnu) in human or superhuman or animal form.

Modern Definition :

An avatar is a computer user's representation of himself/herself or alter ego, whether in the form of a three-dimensional model used in computer games, a two-dimensional icon (picture) or a one-dimensional username used on Internet forums and other communities, or a text construct found on early systems such as MUDs. It is an object representing the user. The term "avatar" can also refer to the personality connected with the screen name, or handle, of an Internet user.
