Our allotment club is holding a best shed competition this year,my friend has been asked to organise it.
What's the best way to judge it ?
Do you have more than one category?
Any suggestions would be most helpful :)

My 3 main suggestions would be:-

1) A shed (not necesarily brand spanking new) should be strong enough, water-tight and securely locked to house what it is intended for.

2) Tools should well maintaned, properly stored (knives out of sight) and well cared for.

3) All chemicals, insecticides etc. should be safely stored out of childrens reach.

Alternatively you could have a fun section and look for originality. One shed on our site has a homemade weather vane another was decorated by children and has flowers painted on it. Some have veranda's attached with a sitting area.

Sometimes you don't know what it needs to be like until you see it, and then you just know it has to be the winner.

I am with OH there: the narrower the definition of "best", the more difficult it will be to find the winner. I would leave it to gut-feeling.

I do think like any competition you must have one or two set guide lines.
Whether it be 'prettiest shed', 'quirkiest' shed, pratical etc.
You wouldn't leave judging fruit and veg to 'gut feelings' would you?

As a guildeline the Hampshire Federation of Horticultural Societies use recommendations from the RHS Show handbook 2008.

While that's not a clear definition I like it :)

Just make sure that people know if it is a serious partof the day or a moment for everyone to relax and smile.
Every awards ceremony needs to take a moment like this (and possibly more than one) but you probablly do need a set your self some guidelines (unless it really is a "most helpful person on the site" award)
