Feeding a heron

I'm feeling very sorry for our poor local heron who I've seen cruising around all day over our totally snow covered landscape, with its frozen ponds. He's looking desperately hungry. Can anybody suggest anything I can put out for him to eat on the surface of our little frozen pond? (Yes. I know I shouldn't encourage him, but we have no fish in the pond and I'm a totally softie who doesn't like to see any of our wild creatures go hungry.)

Hi Primrose, Once when I was on a short trip to an Abu Dhabi oil field I was in the swimming pool when a Heron flopped into the pool. It was absolutely done for and would of drowned if we had'nt dragged it out.The next problem was to feed it up back to health and this was helped by the kitchen staff giving us bits of fish which we chopped up to inch cubes, the Heron devoured them no problem from the ground.I never found out the outcome of this as I had to come home a fortnight later and it was still eating our rations.

Herons will eat mice and voles as well as fish, frogs etc, so you could try some raw meat, Primrose.
