Greenhouse Autovent

The instructions with mine include:
"It is recommended that your window opener - or at least the cylinder - is removed from your greenhouse for the Winter. Store it in a dry place and do not forget to lubricate particularly the piston rod before remounting in the Spring."
Does anybody do this? I quite like the idea of removing the cylinder then tying the vent tightly shut with a cable tie so the wind can't get under it. It will mean recalibrating in the Spring. I have had cylinders fail, was it perhaps because I didn't do this?
