I am writing a history of the Second World War Dig for Victory Campaign, due for publication in 2011, and would like to make contact with anyone who has a story to tell. Perhaps you were there yourself and have memories to share. Or maybe you remember the stories of a parent who was involved, or even have some documentary material (eg diaries) you would be willing to share. I can remember, being in an orchard with my mother, there were many land girls singing and chattering while picking the crop into huge wicker baskets, and I never forgot the wonderful fragrance of the apples, modern ones have lost that smell. I picked the low branches from my pushchair. Will ask my mum if she can add anything tomorrow, she is 91 now. It was Field Farm in Essex I think.

My grandfather fought in the First World War as a regular soldier, and was invalided out of the Second. His part was to coordinate the Dig for Victory campaign in the East Riding of Yorkshire. For his efforts, he received a commendation. This was only recently unearthed following the death of my aunt, and I now have a copy. I have always intended eventually to research into the specifics of his involvement but for lack of time and resources. It's a heritage of which I am particularly proud.

My husband remembers his parents digging up more of the back garden in aid of "dig for victory". But as they already had a vegetable garden and kept chickens, he feels it was probably as much to keep in with the neighbours and show you were doing your bit, as absolute neccessity.
