Planting times for shallots

I am going away for most of January and February. Has anyone successfully planted their shallots in December (ie on the shortest day) or shall I wait till March, when I return? I live in the south of England and garden on light, sandy soil.

I should get them in on the shortest day, March would seem a bit late to me. I always plant mine in December.

I agree with Chantal, Binky. i would get them planted, especially with your soil being on the light side, it shouldn't be too much of a bad job.

WE planted shallots last winter and they were a complete disaster - we stick now to planting just during spring when the onions go in. Winter onions are fine but for some reason not shallots!
