I had a reminder from a very nice member of the forum, that we could do with a new Bits and Bobs for November, so here it is.

Anyway, whilst taking down the last of the Runner Beans yesterday afternoon, i got this overwhelming feeling of wanting to get started again.
Hope that feeling goes away for a couple of months, or i'm going to feel very frustrated by next year.

Nice to see another couple of new members on the forum too.

I know how you are feeling OH! I'm always itching to get
sowing and growing but won't be too long before back room
is filled with pots and trays again. (One of the benefits of
ageing is how fast time goes by).

In the meantime I will compile my Christmas wish list - all
garden orientated of course and wait patiently for the shortest
day to pass. Make my New Year resolution - keep better records
of Lottie, and make next years planting plan. Not to mention
keeping an eye out for new and unusual things to grow. Not
quite the same but will while away some time.

I have puzzled for years to decide when the growing year starts and ends - and I have never come to any conclusion. Yesterday was planting cabbage and kale - so a beginning: next job will be clear the climbing beans and courgettes - so an end. There's nothing so sad as an empty plot or polytunnel over the winter. Then there's next year's seeds to decide on and order, as well as other plans. Oh yes, and cropping salads and herbs etc. It's all go

I do love autumn - somehow it seems to have the promise of spring and planning next year's sowing and planting now is great fun. Perhaps "it's better to travel than to arrive"? And every spring I sow some things far too early, but I don't suppose I'll ever learn.

Dear Donedigging, I am beginning to wonder about Old Herbie this last fortnight we have both been digging in the lottie. Then a couple of young girls come by on horses and shout over to O.H. so off he goes for a half hour chat, thats why he is so far behind me with his digging.
But to crown it all i walked over to the lottie this afternoon and low and behold there stands Herbie talking to a lovely blonde in a brand new aston martin sports car, i don't know if he was thinking of buying one HA HA.

Old Codger does exaggerate sometimes, the Aston Martin had to be at least four weeks old.

I reckon that there is no start or end to the growing year,just continuity,it seems that there is always something to be done.

I reckon that Snooky is correct. If you are raising vegetables there should be a succession throughout the year and one year runs into the next year.
Certainly there are new season sowings but they may only be a couple of weeks off the old season sowing and it really depends on what you are sowing especially where polytunnels are concerned.
I suppose it could be said that as you finish something it is time to sow the next crop of it irrespective at which time of year it is but if you are wise then the sowing should have been done some time before you finish the crop in question. It may not be the season to sow but there are always alternatives and then later sowings to get back on track.
The art of vegetable gardening is to have at least something ready for the table every day of the year. I know that this is easier to say than do but this is what you should be aiming for. So in the best of regulated gardens this may never actually occur but you should still be trying!
