Yes, I know it sounds like a daft question - but I was going to send off for some tree seeds to grow - but then I thought about the japanese maple tree growing in the garden so thought - I'll get my own seeds. Dilemma - I'm looking at the tree but where on earth do I find the seeds, and come to think of it, where were the flowers in the first place?? It's always looked just like a tree with leaves on it, to me. Am I just being stupid?

Er, yes. The seeds are winged keys, like a sycamore. If there are any, that is — a tree has to be quite mature for it to set seed, and then they don't do so every year. The flowers are yellow tassels, not very noticeable, which are wind-pollinated.

If there are seeds, gather them as soon as you can, while they are still green, and sow them straight away into open ground. That way, you will overcome their inherent dormancy. Seeds which are dry and brown can sometimes stay dormant for two years, even three. Like most trees, also, they germinate better after experiencing a period of freezing and thawing.
Allotment, but little achieved.
