Does anyone know why runner beans curl instead of growing straight. I've not had aproblem with this before but most of mine are a nice half moon shape this year.

If the growing point comes up against a leaf or stalk it tends to bend out of the way. The best way for straight runners is to put the poles in an X formation instead of the usual inverted V
Thanks Alan,
For more years than I care to remember I have always grown my beans on straight canes either side of an arch.
They climb up and over so I can walk though to pick but I will take note of what you have said. The only different thing I have done this year is to mix 2 varieties together giving me very pretty red and white flowers.
