Just bought the September issue while out shopping. Got home, opened the cover mount seed pack to be confronted by 3 packs, one marked ONSPWHLIS, which even I can work out is probably the Spring Onions. The other two are both very helpfully marked LETTUCE and a string of numbers. Can someone from the magazine please confirm which is which?

I read that, but I was hoping someone from the magazine could confirm it.

Hi Hotstuff,
The one which says simply Lettuce is the Lambs Lettuce and the other with Lettuce with W..DT is the Winter Density Cos Lettuce.
You must forgive me not having all the right letters because I sowed mine yesterday and put the old packets in the dustbin which was cleared this morning.
They were quite generous with the free seed because the Winter Density
was enough to sow two 126 module trays and the Lambs Lettuce over 2.5 trays. It will grow in these modules on the benches outside and should supply quite a useful amount of salad fodder.
The modules are 1.5"x 1.5"x 2" deep. I have actually, by mistake, grown baby leeks in these modules.
The vast majority of the WD Lettuce will be sold at the gate under the farm gate policy.

JB, thanks for that but the 2 packs I have are marked:

LETTUCE 108371/W

and

LETTUCE 107163 B

From the speculation on another thread they reckon the one ending in W is the Lambs Lettuce.

Hello,
When I opened the packet from my copy of the magazine...only one packet is marked fully with wording "Lettuce"...thus the assumption is that this is the Lambs Lettuce...as the other is not marked with the full word...but is abreviated "Letwindt"... the Winter Density..
(I have not opened either foil pack as yet)...

This then tallies with the packets JB had..

Mine read;

ONSPWHLIS
102122/R

LETTUCE
108371/U

LETWINDT
107163/A

Interesting, because both my packets just say lettuce, and the letters following the numbers don't match, but your winter denisity numbers match mine, just with a B instead of your A, so I am going to plant those ones and see what happens.

I just would have thought all the packets would have had the same numbers etc.
Kind regards,

Elle

Hi Elle,
Feel the packets and the one where you can feel the seeds are roundish is the Lambs Lettuce. The Lettuce Winter Density are smooth seeds and flattened so do not make marks in the foil.

Thanks Johnboy,

I have felt the seeds, and combined with the number theory I have marked the flat seeds (107163B) as WD, and will sow them this weekend as long as I can find a suitable container. Then cross fingers the slugs don't find them and wait!
Kind regards,

Elle
