The weather has been lovely in Cardiff for the test match and my son was praying for rain at one point (more like doing a rain dance) when all looked doomed. All is well now though! My son is a very happy man! Cheers.

Dear Elaine, you make it sound as if your Son was surprised by the result. :)

Regrettably in this Darwin year it was hardly survival of the fittest.

Dear OH. The closing stages of the Test Match was an education for me! I was torn between watching the cricket and my son, who, with dignified anxiety was praying the last two batsmen would manage to stay in until 6.40 and so secure the draw. I must admit, it was very entertaining. (the cricket was good too)
He is in the R.A.F and I now understand why he chose this particular week to come home on leave! Bless his cotton socks!

Must be summer again; people suddenly seem awfully interested in us

When I lived in Aussie I was in walking distance to
the Gabba and loved going to the cricket, sitting on
the hill with the louts, loads of jokes and too much
sun and alcohol. Back in these days got very emotional
about the Ashes (mostly when Aussie didn't win) but
also when they did - 'Why can't we have the real ashes' etc.

When I came here the OH wasn't into it so I lost interest
a bit too. But these teams have that passion back and are
charasmatic and interesting and so is the cricket :!: I am
happily sitting on the fence as to who will win (OK I do start
humming Come On Aussie a bit). The glory of shared alliances
means I can really enjoy the moment and the cricket without
the angst - and this is warming up nicely indeed :D

I confess, I am an addict of TMS. I listen to as much as I can, very entertaining and I love the cricket.
I went to (nearby) Wormsley to see the England Women play Australia Women in a ODI. Fabulous grounds at Wormsley http://www.wormsleycricket.co.uk and the women play well. Great fielding and suprisingly quick bowlers, some of them. Their batting is slightly more subdued, they play straighter, driving, cutting and playing glances to leg.

When the weather is good, I'm on the plot or getting fit for my 30-mile walk. When it's not, rain stops play. Give me the highlights on Ch 5 - that's quite enough cricket for me.

Now England have found a new way to throw away a winning position - which is it going to be, a) collapse and Australia win by 7 wickets b) bat too long and Australia finish 200 short with 6 wickets down?

A win at Lords (fingers crossed for tomorrow) against the Australians! This has not happened since 1934! (and before that 1896).
I should look at a weather forcast...

So what do I know? Great if slightly nervous win. Would Freddie pass a drugs test?

My son is now ecstatic... apart from the fact that he was "stuck in the middle of an airfield" and couldn't watch it live!
Ah well...

Good line from the BBC sports quotes of the week:

Subject: the second Ashes Test on TV.

Daughter: "Who are playing?"
Father: "England and Australia"
Daughter: "Where is it being played?"
Father: "Lords"
Daughter: "Why are they playing in France?"
