Dear Pongeroon, it couldn't have been one of the new Summer varieties could it!
Hope you had a pleasant holiday.

Hello OH, nice to hear from you again. I think the PSB was the same variety as last year, gave us loads of scrumminess from Feb to about April, yum. We don't really want PSB just now, loads of salad stuff and beans to be had...
We had a great holiday thanks, we took the motorbikes on a jolly to the south of France following a noisy boozy music festival just south of Nantes. Much good French food was consumed, much coffee and beer swallowed at roadside cafes, and great fun was had.
Back to work tomorrow.

Dear Pongeroon, maybe the PSB has got stressed through lack of moisture, with all this sultry weather we have been having whilst you have been away.
Glad you had a great time away on your bikes.

Hi Pongeroon. Don't know what's happened with your PSB but your holiday sounds like bliss to me.
I've always been a "biker babe" and I still love riding pillion on my husbands motor bike. Can't beat it. AND I remember the days when we didn't have to wear crash hats. Brilliant!
Cheers.
Happy with my lot
Hello Elaine, you are right, biking is addictive, isn't it? I love it when the bike becomes 'home' on holiday. So long as it doesn't rain too much! We sat on the bikes on the last campsite of the hols, watching a storm coming over the channel. When it started to rain we decamped (ha!) into the tent, where we spent the next half hour holding the tent down from the inside as the tentpegs began to come out of the sand with the ferocious wind and rain. Great to look back on, not so good at the time!
OH, I was thinking the same about the PSB; too much heat and dryness, plant thinks 'oooh, I'd better flower now, cos I might not survive this', maybe?

I currently have summer PSB and my winter PSB
shooting. The summer has been going for a while
now but the winter has just started. It will be well
exhausted by winter so I am on the lookout for plants
to replace it. Let me know if anyone sees any in
the catalogues.
Mine are watered well but very exposed and hot
weather may have freaked them out a bit. Luckily
I like it so much but may be fed up by the time
it should be ready - on second thoughts maybe not

Hi Pongeroon and Westi,
I would more than suspect that you both planted you seed far too early.
PSB for winter and autumn picking should only just be large enough for planting out now. Sow Late March, April and May and plant out in July or August. This means that the Delfland plants mentioned are right on cue.
BTW the summer PSB's can be grown in succession from Feb to June to give pickings from June until the first of the winter varieties which is Rudolph and I noticed an extra early Rudolph in one catalogue.
I experimented a few years back trying to get Broccoli in every one of the 12 months and succeeded but had a break in continuity of about 14 days. The last of my F1 Claret finished the first week in June and the summer variety 'Spike' came on stream in the third week.
I can recommend 'Spike' from Edwin Tuckers. It is an open pollinated variety and is just as good as F1 Bordeaux which is decidedly a lot more expensive. In theory it should be possible to save the seed of 'Spike' although I have never done so.
JB.

Hello Johnboy, I was hoping you would come up with an answer.
I expect you are right about the PSB, I don't think I sowed it much earlier than usual, but the plants really took off well when planted out. Too well, obviously! Do you think I could squeeze in another sowing, or is too late?

Hi Pongeroon,
Well lets consider what the worst that could happen. No PSB during the spring of next year. Unthinkable!!
My advice is to buy one of the later varieties of Broccoli either F1 Claret or the good old Late PSB and go for it.
The idea is to get the plants into a state when they will be mature enough to withstand the rigours of the winter and although now late by about 6 weeks I recon that it is well worth the try even if you may have to nurse the plants by covering with fleece if the worst comes to the worst, to me it is well worth the try.
Now repeat after me 'Our father -------.'
